CASE STUDY. Kgomotso is a thirteen-year-old, who lives with his grandmother. They are poor and Kgomotso likes to spend as much time away from their home as he can and seeks the company of 4 other men. Desperate to make some money, he accepts an invitation to work for a taxi owner. His job is to attract passengers by hanging out the taxi window, calling out the taxi route, and signalling for the driver to stop to pick up passengers. At first, Kgomotso worked over weekends, but, within a brief time, his work hours were increased, and he began missing school to finish his shifts. The taxi driver assures him that he can work as many trips as he chooses because he knows that Kgomotso wants to pick up more fares. However, the taxi owner pays him considerably less than the other men who work for him; and he also fails to acknowledge that Kgomotso is a child that needs regular meals, adequate rest, and time to do his schoolwork. He makes many promises to Kgomotso that he does not fulfill, such as increasing Kgomotso's wages, giving him busy routes, and teaching him to drive. The grandmother is worried about Kgomotso because she does not trust the taxi owner. QUESTIONS 1.1. What is your understanding of "the child in need of care and protection"? (2) 1.2.
