Case Study: Mrs. Johnson Mrs. Johnson is a 57-year-old woman with four children in their 20s who comes in at their insistence. A year ago, her husband of 32 years left her for a younger woman. Since then, she has been unable to mobilize herself. She has felt fearful every day and incapable of making decisions about what she should do about any aspect of her life (e.g. whether to continue living in her house, whether to seek a job, how to handle her finances, and even what clothes to buy). She is constantly begging her children for the advice and emotional support that her husband had previously provided. Her children love her and understand her plight but are becoming increasingly annoyed by her inability to stand on her own feet. Friends who had previously been very fond of Mrs. Johnson have also been put off by her constant demands for assistance and have begun to avoid her. Most of Mrs. Johnson's friends and acquaintances cannot understand why she is so devastated by her husband's desertion. He had been chronically unfaithful, impossible to please, and was always very tight with money. He did, however, make all the important decisions for Mrs. Johnson. He decided how they would spend and invest their money, where they would live, when and where they would go on vacation, when they would eat out and where, what movies they would see, whom they would entertain, where the children would go to school, and even what careers the children should be encouraged to pursue. Mrs. Johnson always shopped with her and even helped her choose all her clothes. After he left, Mrs. Johnson collapsed, felt unable to do anything, and lapsed into a helpless funk. Mrs. Johnson was the only child of a doting mother. Her father died in World War II when she was 3 years old. Her mother was a strong and possessive woman who dressed her, treated her like a fragile doll, and made all her decisions.Mrs. Johnson mother scheduled her days with a round of lessons and prearranged social activities and also selected her friends for her. During her third year of college, her mother died suddenly in a car accident. Mrs. Johnson, her mother's lawyer and executor of the will, took charge of handling all Mrs. Johnson's affairs after her mother's death and soon became her advisor and confidant. Mrs. Johnson was relieved when he asked her to marry him because she had quickly become totally dependent on him to fill the void left by her mother's death.
