Case Study: Nickelodeon Underwater Resort in Coron, Palawan The American television network Nickelodeon planned to construct a themed resort in Coron, Palawan. Viacom International Media Networks, which owns Nickelodeon, and Coral World Park formed a partnership for this project that aimed to give significant business opportunities for their partners in several industries. They plans to build an underwater type theme park that will serve as a major attraction in Coron where fans will get to interact with the network's most iconic characters, including SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer. However, several groups like Greenpeace Philippines and Conservation International Philippines opposed and criticized the said plan because they consider Coron as the last ecological frontier. They made a petition to the Department of Tourism (DOT) for the cancellation of the project and reminded them that they should be promoting a tourism industry that is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable as stated in the Tourism Act of 2009. Coron has a thousand hectares of marine protected areas that boasts of pristine waters and vibrant wildlife. Seagrass meadows and mangrove forests are seen in the area which serve as marine habitats. According to coral reef scientist Dr. Wifredo Licuanan, there are at least two (2) coral species in the area that are globally endangered. Questions: 1.
