Case Study on Student Emotional Health You are the principal at a school that opened three years ago. Your faculty and staff are well-trained on social-emotional health issues with students. During an advisory lesson with students, the topic is "suicide prevention" and students are fairly forthcoming about what they are thinking and feeling. Later in the day two students from Mr. Jones' homeroom who participated in this lesson come tell him that there are students on social media who have been talking about self-harm and suicide recently. They are concerned that some of the warning signs discussed in their advisory lesson are being demonstrated by these students. Ms. Jones walks these two students to the counselor's office and sits with them briefly while telling the counselor, Mrs. Rawlins, what the students want to report. The counselor speaks at length to both students, views some of the Instagram posts being referenced, and then Mrs. Rawlins comes to speak to you - the principal - about her significant concerns. It seems that the students talking about suicide online are at-risk in other areas, and the posts they have made are specific. They are all students in your building except one. You ask your counselor to speak to each of your students individually and screen them for their intent, plan, and access to a method. Three of the seven students spoken to demonstrate high risk based upon the counselor's training. She is alarmed enough by the responses of these three students having an articulated plan, place, time, and method, that she is ready to take action in next steps. 1. What happens next? 2. Who does the school call? 3. What is the message to those who are called? 4. Do these students go home on the bus or walk? 5. What is happening with these three students while decisions are being made? 6. Is there any paperwork that is filled out on these students? 7. What if this process is still being engaged in when the work day and school day are over? 8. What happens with the four students who were not screened as high risk?
