Case Study:2 (5 Marks) ADWARE THAT INFECTS your computer to display pop-ups is an annoyance. But when it infects as many as one in three networks in the world and hides the capability to do far more serious damage to its victims, it is an epidemic waiting to happen. The security firm "Accu Check has warned of a massive new outbreak: They count 100 million plus PCs infected with malicious code they have called blaze, designed to hijack browsers to change the default search engine, and track their web traffic on behalf of a China-based digital marketing firm called craftech. But more disturbingly, "Accu Check" says it found that the malware also can remotely run any code on the victim's machine or download new malicious files. It is potentially serious malware, disguised as something more trivial. "A quarter-billion computers could very easily become victims of real malware," says Mayer chase, the head of Accu Check research team. It installs a backdoor into all these computers that can be very easily exploited in the hands of the Chinese people behind this campaign." Accu Check research team traced the blaze infections to craftech by analysing the domains of the command-and-control servers that the malware links back to. They were also able to check the registration of the domains used to host the highly obscure search engines - which load results from Google and Yahoo blaze forces on its victims. But Accu Check says it cannot be exactly sure how craftech profits from hosting Google and Yahoo search results on obscure sites. Neither Google nor Yahoo responded immediately to a request for comment about any potential involvement in the adware scheme. Questions: 1) What can be the goals of blaze adware developers. Discuss how adware can harm our networked PC's. 2) As the e-commerce manager, how will you safeguard your companies' data servers and customer data
