Case:

You are applying to the "PSB Leadership Bursary" at Sheridan College[1]. This bursary is awarded to students in the Pilon School of Business (PSB) who show exceptional promise in one or more of the following areas: academic achievement; leadership within the PSB community; and/or leadership in the community outside of Sheridan. To apply for the bursary, you need a letter of reference from an instructor whose course you took in a previous semester. (If you are in your first semester at Sheridan, you may address the email to an instructor from your secondary school.)

Write an email to one of your former instructors in which you request a letter of reference. In your email, ensure that you introduce yourself (i.e., remind your instructor which course / section you took with them, and which semester). Explain to them the selection criteria for the bursary, and how your skills and experience match those criteria. Remind them what you achieved in their course (e.g., your final grade, along with some excellent work you submitted). Make sure that you show lots of goodwill. Thank them for considering this request and be mindful of your tone. Let them know when the letter needs to be submitted, and to whom (i.e., next steps). Ensure that you have provided ALL the information they need in order to a) accept your request for a letter; and b) write you a strong letter that will improve your chances of winning the bursary.
