CAT: Anomie Theory

The sociological approach to crime, particularly concerning the unequal distribution of power in our society, is in keeping with sociologist Robert Merton's anomie theory regarding social adaption and feelings of social alienation (Stults & Falco, 2014). Merton argued that channels of obtaining wealth are stratified across class and status lines. Therefore, individuals with little or no formal education and economic resources find it difficult to acquire wealth legally, which is the preeminent success symbol of our society. Consequently, many individuals develop criminal or delinquent behaviors to attain goals (Baron, 2020).

Also, theorists of the anomie theory assume that people who have the education and economic means to achieve wealth but still commit crimes are individuals who reject society's goals (Stults & Falco, 2014). Empirical studies are adding to the reliability of this sociological approach. However, the studies do not explain why many individuals with little education and incomes below the federal poverty level are some of the most honest and hardworking people in our society. Many of these individuals have never committed a crime or delinquent act.
