CCC Background

James Pantin always took pride in his appearance. He believed that a well-pressed suit was the key to good day. In 1998 he had the opportunity to purchase a small dry cleaning company from his aunt and uncle, who were retiring. For the last 17 years, Mr. Pantin has run this business. Recently, his youngest daughter, Misha has joined him to manage the business.

CCC Services

CCC is a dry cleaning business. It specializes in the professional cleaning of different types of clothing and household items, including shirts, pants, dresses, ties, coats, draperies, sheets, and comforters, to name a few. They provide services for both individual customers and other small businesses as well.

CCC Technology Landscape

When James bought the business, all processes were paper based. Since those early days, he has introduced small amounts of technology. Misha's recent arrival to the company has sparked a new wave of excitement and enthusiasm in the business. She wants to take CCC into the 21st century. The company uses state-of-the-art equipment to clean clothing but very little for the actual management of data and resources in the business. There are many opportunities to innovate and be more competitive through the use of information systems.

Rubrics are posted at the bottom of each assignment.

Overview

Clean Clothes Company has many paper files. Recently, Misha has suggested to her father that they need a database to better manage the company's data. They both agree that this new information system would improve the business.

Tasks

The main task for this assignment is to design a simple database to help the company manage customer data. They would like track all of their customers and show the different dry cleaning transactions placed by each customer.

Questions

Design a Access Database with three different tables: Customers, Garments, and Transactions. The Customers and Garments tables are related to each other via the Transactions table. One Customer can have many different Transactions, and one type of Garment can be in many different transactions. For example, many different customers can have pants cleaned at the dry cleaners.

Specific Tasks

Complete each specific task listed below:

  1. Open Microsoft Access, and design a new database called CCC (standing for Clean Clothes Company).
  2. Deisgn a table called Customers. The attributes of the Customer table are the following:
    • Customer_Id (Primary Key)
    • Lastname
    • Firstname
    • SAddress
    • City
    • State
    • ZipCode
    • Phone
    • Email
  3. Design a table called Garments. The attributes of the Garments table are the following:
    • Garment_Id (Primary Key)
    • Garment_Type
  4. Design a table called Transactions. The attributes of the Transactions table are as follows:
    • Transaction_Id (Primary Key)
    • Customer_Id (Foreign Key)
    • Clothing_Id (Foreign Key)
    • DropOffDate
    • PickUpDate
  5. Design a relationship diagram linking all three tables together.
  6. Design forms for each of the three tables.
  7. For each table, add new data via the following forms:
    • For the Customer table, add data for at least 10 Customers. You can be creative and make up the names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses for all customers. For address data use the names of actual cities, states and zip codes.
    • For the Garment table, add 4 different types of clothing that you are familiar with e.g. coat, jacket.
    • For the Transactions table, add 10 different transactions associated with the Customer table. For Transactions make-up 5 that happened in 2018 and 5 that happened in 2019.
  8. Design a query to show the names and phone numbers of all customers.
  9. Design a query to show names of all the customers who used the Rush service (Note: Rush refers to jobs that have the same drop off and pick up dates).
  10. Design a query to show names of all the customers who used the dry cleaning services prior to January 15, 2019.
  11. Design two different reports for this database.
