ce Skating on a New England Pond Growing up in my small New England town with a predominantly French Canadian population, the favorite winter sporting activity was ice skating. We had a pond in our town that was the social center for ice skating (Cass Pond in Woonsocket, R.I.) Whenever it got below freezing the big question was, "How long before we can skate on the pond?" a) (50pts) The Parks and Recreation Department rule was that the outside air temperature had to be -5 C. for 24hrs before we were allowed to skate. They claimed this would provide a 4 inch (10cm) thick layer of ice at the deepest point in the pond. Were they correct? b) (25pts) As you might expect for cold New England Winter days, the wind does pick-up over the pond. It is estimated (by 9 yr old Skip) that h=50W/m2K over the pond surface. How does that change your answer in part a)? SHOW ALL YOUR WORK Pond Dimensions: D=100m; depth =10m Water: T (initial )=+5C.(278K) Air: Tair=5C(268K) Suggested Solution Path 1) Sketch Problem. 2) Provide all Given information. 3) Clearly state all your assumptions. 4) Provide calculated evidence that your solution path is justified (Biot\# or Fourier\#)
