SCENARIO:
The grant received by Anika's Animal Shelter (AAS) was written with a few specific goals, one of which was to add dog training services to the shelter's current program offering. The recently acquired grant will enable the shelter to hire three new full-time dog trainers to provide both group-level classes and in-home and community training for new dog owners and their adopted dogs (see "Dog Trainer Job Profile" section of the attached Supporting Documents). The job profile is a segment of the overall job description that needs to be developed for the role. Further, the grant was written with the appropriate expenses to allow the shelter to differentiate itself from other businesses. At least one of the dog trainers will be certified in dog training and behavior, pet first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Although there are no education or licensing requirements in Anika's state, Anika believes that hiring someone certified will encourage a solid stream of business. Dog trainers will need to be able to transport a dog and its owner to community parks, grocery stores, or other local places considered critical to the success of the dog/owner pair. Further, the trainers may provide elevated in-house training to the other workers and volunteers.
As the HR generalist for the organization, you realize that the dog trainer positions are a critical piece to the overall needs of the shelter, and the three-year timeline specified in the grant demands that you make this a high-priority project. Based on the challenge presented, you are tasked with partnering with the shelter manager to develop a general overview of the steps necessary to identify, engage with, onboard, and retain the new employees who will support the shelter's initiative.
