Ch 4 Activity Suppose that you are a researcher interested in knowing if the gestation period of an animal can be used to predict the life expectancy. You have obtained the following data: Animal Gestation Life Expectancy Period (days) (years) Cat 63 11 Chicken 22 7.5 Dog 63 11 Duck 28 10 Goat 151 12 Lion 108 10 Parakeet 18 8 Pig 115 10 Rabbit 31 Squirrel 44 9 TASK 1: Answer the following questions and complete the tasks given. a) Draw a scatter plot of the information above. 20 15 10 50 100 150 b) Based on the scatter plot alone, explain whether the gestation period and the life expectancy are correlated. If they are, discuss the strength of the correlation and the direction (POSTIVE or NEGATIVE).Your scatter plot should look something like this a) Find the correlation coefficient r using your calculator. b) Explain what r implies. c) Find the line of regression using your calculator. d) Interpret the slope and the intercept, if appropriate. e) Suppose a new species has been discovered. After breeding the species in captivity, it is determined that the gestation period is 95 days. Use the least squares regression line to predict the life expectancy. 2 f) Humans have a gestation period of 268 days and a life expectancy of 76.5 years. Add this to your data set and compute the correlation coefficient. What does the addition of humans to the set have on r? g) Remove humans from the data set and add elephants (gestation period: 624 days, life expectancy: 35 years). Compute the correlation coefficient. h) Discuss the differences in the two values of r and the lines of regression when the humans are included and when the elephants are included
