Changes in tastes can have devastating impacts on wine grape growers. It takes 3 to 5 years for a newly planted grapevine to begin producing. When tastes shifted from red to white wines during the 1970s and 1980s, grape growers ripped out red grape vines such as cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel, replacing them with white varietals (chardonnay and sauvignon blanc). During the 1990s the health benefits of red wine caused tastes to shift back to red wines. Today the movie Sideways has popularized pinot noir. Growing wine grapes is a difficult business indeed.
