Chapter 11 Problem 4

Trauma victims frequently suffer from intrusive memories and images of the traumatic event. We are interested in the effectiveness of a new therapeutic technique that uses structured recall of the traumatic event in conjunction with a cognitive restructuring of the experience. We have seven trauma patients record their intrusive thoughts for a 1-week period before receiving the therapy (0 months), after 2 months of therapy (2 months), at termination (4 months), and again 2 months after completing therapy (6 months). The data are shown below. Did the new therapy significantly affect intrusive memories in these patients?

Patient # 0 Months 2 Months 4 Months 6 Months
1 14 10 9 10
2 10 8 5 6
3 8 7 5 2
4 16 12 8 10
5 12 11 10 9
6 9 8 5 5
7 8 7 7 7

Please compare the groups using a one-way repeated measures ANOVA and type your responses below. Please sure to show the seven steps for hypothesis testing and include the ANOVA summary table. If you obtain a significant F-ratio, use Fisher's LSD to determine which groups differ. Show the LSD calculation and the table of mean difference. please provide the analyses in SPSS. Provide the SPSS output table and circle or highlight the F-ratio and p-value.

How many dependent variables are there? What is(are) it(they)? ( point)

How many independent variables are there? What is(are) it(they)? How many levels are there for each IV? ( point)

Include your calculations on a separate sheet of paper. Also, cut and paste the SPSS Output table below. Again, be sure to circle the F-ratio and p-value. If you obtain a significant F-ratio, be sure to include your Fisher's LSD calculation and table of mean differences.

Step 6: Circle your decision below: ( point)

  1. Reject H0
  2. Fail to reject H0

Step 7: Conclusion: Was the number of intrusive thoughts the same at each time point? ( point)

  1. Yes, the number of intrusive thoughts was the same at the four time points.
  2. No, the number of intrusive thoughts was not the same at the four time points.

Conclusion continued: Which of the following time points were significantly different with regard to the number of intrusive thoughts? (Circle all that apply.) ( point)

  1. 0 Months and 2 Months
  2. 0 Months and 4 Months
  3. 0 Months and 6 Months
  4. 2 Months and 4 Months
  5. 2 Months and 6 Months
  6. 4 Months and 6 Months
  7. None of the above.
