Chapter 4 also explores the concepts of civil and criminal law. It can be confusing when we begin discussing the difference between felonies, misdemeanors, and civilltort actions. When I was learning this, it was helpful to me to visualize where would the person committing the act go? While certainly not covering every case or potential outcome, it gets the point across. Those who commit murder generally go to prison. Think about it, most murderers are not getting out on Huber release to go to work every morning and returning themselves at 5 pm for the night (keeping in mind there are always exceptions and sometimes transition phases). Those who are caught with drugs may go to jail. The difference between prison and jail here would be the amount of drugs and perhaps intent to sell level. Those who are careless and someone is injured because of the careless act may be sued. This is called a civil action, a wrong against another person who must be "made whole". Made whole usually involves financial reimbursement which can cost the person {or an insurer depending upon the case) a lot of money (the poorhouse).
