CHAPTER 7 - Constitutional Law Kate Krisp, a high school junior, was the captain of the Castleton High School softball team. Castleton is a public high school. Kate has broken several school records and has pitched three perfect games in her career. She was popular with her teammates and with her coach. At the end of her sophomore year, her coach was replaced and Kate was quite upset about it. The new coach, Sheryl Shore, was known as a disciplinarian and found fault with Kate's practice habits. Coach Shore benched Kate for two games as a result. Kate, who asked why she was subjected to such a penalty, was angered at the coach's response: "Don't complain because I run this team and I can decide what I want." Kate took out her anger on her Facebook page, where she wrote a critical statement about the coach, saying, "Coach Shore has a military mindset and is one of the stupidest individuals I've ever met. EFF YOU." Once that was posted, several students informed Coach Shore, who informed the Director of Athletics (AD) of the school. The AD then suspended Kate from the team for the remainder of the season for breaking the athletic department's code of conduct regarding posting negative language relating to Castleton, an opponent, or an official.
