For many years, much of the legal community has looked down on the criminal defense attorney and their practice of criminal law. These attitudes may stem from the kinds of legal work a defense attorney is forced to do - working with shady characters, negotiating for the release of known thugs or hoodlums, and zealously defending alleged criminals in their trials.

Given what we know about defense attorneys (in particular public defenders appointed to represent indigeny defendants) are these stereotypes fair? Why or who not?
