Charles Walgreen has supervised a unit of six employees for eleven years. In the past, unit performance has been high and turnover very low. But in the last three months, three employees have left the unit. Two of the remaining employees, Frank and Pauline, have both been in the unit about 15 years and are the top performers in the unit. They know all of the jobs in the unit and are paid the same salary. In addition, they are close friends. A recent merger with another company has caused the unit's workload to increase substantially. For the past two months, Charles has relied heavily on Frank and Pauline, and all three have worked almost every weekend. Due to the high volume of work that must be done, training the three new employees has been very difficult, and Charles reflects that if it had not been for Frank and Pauline, things would really be in a mess. On Monday morning, Charles had just completed a weekly "To Do" list. Twenty of the items on the list were "must do's," and Charles realized that it was impossible to get all twenty done. As he sat thinking about this problem, Frank walked into his office. Frank was upset saying, "Pauline and I have been carrying the load for the whole unit for over two months. We have worked overtime and on weekends to meet deadlines. We have been saddled with training the new employees and we have gotten little or no direction or advice on priorities from you. All this and nobody has said 'thanks' or 'kiss my foot.' We are not being paid enough to do all this, and even if we were, we are not interested in devoting our entire lives to this job. We've got families and we want some time at home, too.
