Choose an author of adult literature (not children's, young adult, or "new adult" authors)and be familiar with theircanon,or body of published work.A list of suggested authors will be made available with this assignment, but others are still possible.Keep in mind the difference between pop culture and literature.If you choose a pop culture author, be sure to establish and focus on literary qualities in the work.Liking an author's work or finding it entertaining is a first step here, but it is only a first step: think about the long-term impact the works might have, and how they work.

In no more than one page, share with us the significant details of the author's biography.Focus on those details that play a role in the work.

Then, analyze and interpret at least one of the author's pieces, discussing it in terms of relevant literary elements (plot, theme, sound, repetition, staging, etc.).The appropriate elements will depend on the genre of work you choose.Fiction, poetry and drama are options here.

Finally, discuss at least one critical interpretation of that same work. Here, you will find it helpful to consult some research databases available through the library.(We will have material linked on our site beginning in Week 11.)Your argument should be supported with evidence from your academic sources.That means that it is also expected that MLA documentation, including accurate and complete works cited, will be included.Documentation will factor significantly into the grade for this assignment.

In addition, this submission will be evaluated for clear organization, the thoughtful use of scholarly material (analysis, response, refutation, rebuttal), and the use of Standard English.
