- Chooseoneof the following cases below. Develop all parts that should be present in a case study. For example, the citation, facts, issues, etc.

- Connect the case to specific Charter sections and/or the Ontario Human Rights Code. You must determine what connections are appropriate depending on the social groups, institutions, and individuals found in the case.

- Prepare both arguments in favour of the individual's rights and in favour of society's protection.

- Organize the information and use either a description of a relevant Supreme Court Case or a Complaint Process that could proceed to the Human Rights Tribunal to support your case.

- Develop the settlement and predict the consequences upon society if the individual were to win.

Cases: 1. A father refused to allow his child to receive a blood transfusion. The family are Jehovah Witnesses and claim it is against their religion. Ths hospital orders the transfusion with the support of a court order which grants them 72 hours guardianship of the child. The father claims his rights have been violated.

2. Mr. Smith wishes to publish an article in the newspaper soliciting members for his group, the Ku Klux Klan, which is an infamous white supremacist group. The newspaper will not accept his article and Mr. Smith believes that his rights have been violated.

3. A group of Sikhs had to make a court appearance to answer a charge. The presiding judge ruled that the accused could not wear a kirpan while in court. A kirpan is a ceremonial dagger (has a hilt and blade approximately 10 cm in length). It is a basic symbol of the Sikh religion, whose tenets require it to be worn by male Sikhs at all times. Sikhs are supposed to understand that actually using the kirpan as a weapon must only be done as a last resort in self-defence. The judge made his decision because the kirpan could potentially be used as a weapon and he was responsible for the protection of the public in the courtroom. The Sikhs believed their rights have been violated.

4. Harry, a teacher in a local Ontario Catholic Secondary School, was suspended from his job because he tested positive for having A.I.D.S.
