Choose one of the scenarios posted below and apply the Step-Wise approach. In this assignment, you are essentially demonstrating your understanding of applied ethics and determining an ethical response to the dilemmas in your chosen scenario. You can review the Step-Wise approach in pages 159-162 in your textbook. There are 7 steps to the step-Wise approach and it is expected that you provide a response to each step. The Step-Wise approach includes the following 7 steps: 1. Identify the problem and the ethical concern 2. Apply a relevant Code of Ethics 3. Determine the nature and dimensions of the ethical dilemma (i.e., individual v. community) 4. Generate possible courses of action 5. Consider the potential consequences of those courses of action 6. Select a course of action and evaluate it 7. Implement the course of action (explain how you would implement it) Ethical Scenarios (Choose ONE): There are not necessarily right or wrong responses to these scenarios, and there are a variety of ethical paths forward. However, some ethical decision-making practices are more thoughtful than others. See the marking guide below for further detail. 1. You're a counselor at a high school. Shelly, a 16 year-old student comes to speak with you weekly about familial and school stress. Her parents are getting divorced and she's going through a difficult time at home and this is affecting her schoolwork and her relationship with friends. She's articulated that she doesn't know what she'd do without your weekly counseling sessions. On her most recent visit, she has disclosed that she's trying to 'secretly' get pregnant from a boy at school, because she feels like a baby would fill the current loneliness she's experiencing. [PLEASE NOTE, THIS SCENARIO IS NOT ASKING YOU TO PROVIDE YOUR OPINION ON TEEN PREGNANCY]. 2. You work at a live-in addictions' treatment facility. The facility has a strict policy that residents cannot use drugs or alcohol while staying there and receiving treatment. Kyle, a middle-aged man who you've worked with for the past several months has been doing really well in his treatment. Prior to coming to the centre, he had lost his family and was living on the street. A family friend encouraged Kyle to check-in to the centre. When you were doing your nightly rounds and saying goodnight to residents, you suspect that Kyle is high. When you confront him about this, he promises you it was a minor slip-up and pleads with you not to kick him out, as he has nowhere else to go. 3. You work as a family councillor with a local First Nations community. You're not from that community (even if you are Indigenous, this is not your community). You've been counselling a number of families through different hardships - the loss of a child, divorce, familial trauma. You get a message from an Elder in the community inviting you to a community feast to thank you for your work. They want you to say a few words about the work you've done there. Many of the families you treat will be present and the community wishes to give you a gift. You have a great deal of respect for this community and you and to continue working with them.
