Reading:
This week the personnel department of ABC Corporation is interviewing eight people for an accounting
position. Yesterday, Ali and Abdullah had their job interviews. Ali's appointment was at 9:00 am and the
interview finished at 10:00. Abdullah's appointment was next and his interview was the same amount of
time as Ali's interview. Ali and Abdullah went to university together, but only Ali had some work
experience. So, Abdullah isn't as optimistic about his chances as Ali is because the interviewer told them
that the most important criteria for hiring were the applicants' college grades and previous work experience.
After the interviewer asked them about their education and work experience, he gave them the opportunity
to ask him some questions about the company. Ali and Abdullah were pleased to leam that ABC
Corporation takes good care of its employees. There are many opportunities for a hard worker to gradually
climb the corporate ladder and each promotion brings an increase in income. In addition, the company has a
good retirement program to protect its older workers. Abdullah also asked about the number of vacation
days per year and learned that the company allowed 30 vacation days the first two years. However, after
that, employees are allowed 40 days per year.
Ali is especially excited about the idea of working for ABC Corporation because of a major export project
currently being started there. If he is hired, Ali hopes to be assigned to this project. However, Abdullah is
only interested in starting to get some work experience, so he will be happy with any job. That's why
Abdullah has applied at several other companies.
