Identify your top concern in your current or past workplace that negatively affects culture. Discuss:

  1. The difference in perception of this concern between leadership and frontline staff
  2. The effects on employee morale and retention
  3. Any effects on patient satisfaction or safety, potential or actual
  4. Formulate three strategies for addressing this concern via SMART goals.Links to an external site. One of these goals must address the matter at the unit level, one must address how mentoring/training of leaders or frontline staff could improve the situation, and one must address the issue from a system-wide focus.

Example: let's say I'm working in a procedural area with slow turnover times in operating suites.

My discussion might mention physician frustration from slow case turnover, leading to a negative, tense environment and poor staff retention and morale. This can affect the patients by causing them to wait NPO for procedures, and also cause OR staff to rush to prepare, leading to possible mistakes. On a systems level, this affects the cost of care. So my goals might look like:

By the end of two weeks, Surgeon Jones will create a pull list of supplies for all her procedures; this list will be laminated and placed in a binder accessible in the supply room.

By the end of one month, the surgical educator will train all unit staff via an in-service on using the new pull sheets to prepare all supplies the evening prior to the case whenever possible. The supplies for each case will be kept and labeled on a shelf in the supply closet. This will be evaluated by random monitoring of supply pulls twice weekly, with a goal that 90% of non-emergent cases have all supplies pulled the night before within two months

By the end of six months, procedural staff will report (via a survey) a 25% increase in workplace satisfaction.

By the end of six months, case turnover time will be shortened by 30%.

Within one year, hospital case turnover costs will be reduced by 30%.
