Class, I have been confronted by managers that felt because they were put in a leadership development program they were not doing their job properly. With those managers I would ask them, "do you want all of your direct reports to be able to do their job more effectively?" Most would say of course, some managers would say they want most of their direct reports to be more effective but they have a few that do excellent work already. To those that say "of course, I would" my response is "if you provide them with the training or development to do just that does that mean they are in trouble or are being punished?" I would tell them about the professional golfers again (as I mentioned in Week 6); for the most part all professional golfers have coaches, swing coaches, fitness coaches, thought coaches, etc. They are already the best in the world; why do they employ coaches? They are not trying to change or rebuild their swing; they are trying to get that 1 to 2 strokes per round improvement. For those that say "I have a few that do excellent work already" I bring the pro golfer analogy
