CMPE331 Data Transmission in Computer Communication Fall 2021 Homework 2 Date: 02/01/2022 Due Date: 09/01/2022 1. Objective The objective of this homework is to help students to understand and employ Nyquist's and Shannon's maximum channel capacity theorems. Also, the use of the necessary mathematical techniques is aimed to be achieved. 2. Problem A cable modem is to operate using a channel in the frequency spectrum of 1 MHz and 2 MHz and an SNRdB of 3 dB. a) Find the maximum data rate that may be available on this channel assuming no-noise conditions. b) Find the maximum data rate that may be available on this channel assuming the given noise conditions. c) Calculate the maximum data rate that may be available on this channel assuming the given SNR = 999. d) Assuming that the theoretical limit in (c) is reachable, calculate the number of signaling levels that needs to be used. (Hint: use Nyquist's formula at this data rate to find the M=number of signal levels needed). NOTES: SNR = S/N = Signal Power / Noise Power is a unitless ratio. It can also be expressed in decibels using the SNRde formula as follows: SNRdB = S/N in dB = (S/N). = 10 log, S/N and to find the SNR we get S/N = 10S/N}dB / 10 V/X (since if b = al, then y = log.b, i.e. y= x log10 b gives b=10), also: log. (a) = logx (a) / log, (b) e.g.: log2 (100) = log10 (100) / log10 (2) = 2 /0.301 = 6.6445 and to verify: 2 6.6445 = 100 dB 10 3. Deliverables Submit a word report which includes the following: Show calculations in detail and provide a table of results for Section 2 (a) to (d) sections. 4.
