Collaboration inspires innovation. Innovation is essential to change from a traditional approach to a free-thinking, unrestrained perspective with continuous improvement. Large firms with deep pockets to fund R&D efforts often lead new industry approaches. Steed (1982) suggests that "threshold firms" as innovation leaders can help propel innovation and growth. In an analysis of the characteristics typical of threshold firms, it was reported that "size and ownership," "internationalization," "wood supply," "employee relations," and "collaboration in design and production" are characteristics that are instrumental in organizational change and growth within the forest sector (Hanna et al., 2017, p. 706). Therefore, it appears that smaller firms can benefit from the efforts of the larger firms by aligning themselves with these larger firms and collaborating by adding their perspectives.
