COMM 253 Student Example Proposal for Team Project: "Four-Story Haunted House" Idea: Given the popularity of escape rooms and haunted houses in Dubai, I'd like to develop the idea for a "playable," narrative- driven haunted house experience with four possible "stories," where participants adopt certain roles and have to achieve particular objectives. Possible themes/story structures could include Saw, The Haunting Of, Exorcism, or Cloverfield. Situation: Two options: 1) we have developed the concept and have secured copyright permission and agreements with the associated studio for the relevant properties, and are looking for investors here to fund our "Startup experience" or 2) we have initial agreements re: space and investment capital, but are negotiating to use studio properties as themes. (Alternatively, we develop experiences that draw on popular concepts, but don't require franchising or similar permissions, and then we return to #1.) Possible Roles (What we need to do): CREATIVE: Concept development, including schematics and maybe some initial artwork. LEGAL: copyright research (easier to mimic than to adopt or thematize existing properties?), COST/HR: real estate and overhead (proposed sites, estimates for staffing, including managerial, customer service, performers, tech support), MARKET: research baseline costs for similar endeavors, estimate market share, overhead, and potential income across first four quarters PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT: multi-faceted: clarify audience and purpose, develop appropriate materials (conceptual work and illustration, but also market study material) Upsides: This project will likely appeal broadly to our actual audience- they are familiar with the experiences we plan to blend, and have likely seen their popularity. They'll be particular interested in the concept work. Abundant material already exists, not just in terms of the visual and media content that we can use as a point of engagement/departure, but likely in terms of existing market and profit studies for similar ventures. Downsides: We'll have to be careful about "borrowed" intellectual material for our own proposals, and this will require a fair bit of research, both into legal and market challenges, before we can finalize our situation.
