"The most important characteristics work in conjunction with each other:
Willingness to consider alternative views and to change
Team members help each other
Team members capture, share, and use lessons learned
Team members demonstrate a constant focus on improvement.
These four characteristics of high performing teams are built on trust, respect, communication, and authenticity. In order for teams to be effective, members need to trust and respect each other's opinions. They must communicate when they are ahead or behind in the project and ask for help or provide help when needed. The basis of all relationships is based on trust and respect. Kloppenborg et al. (2019) supports this with "It is difficult to overestimate the impact that effective communication has on project teams" (p. 150). As the leader of the project, the project manager must offer "Transparency in communication and action and aligning both are critical and will set an example for the rest of the team and instill trust among all team members" (Kloppenborg et al., 2019, p. 151). When he/she exude this, members have the psychological safety to open share.
Team members need to bring their authentic self and ideas to be able to provide alternative suggestions. Innovation occurs when we don't allow group think and thrive in ideas. As part of being authentic, "A self-aware individual is more effective in establishing relationships by better appreciating and valuing the contribution of others and being willing to learn from them" (Kloppenborg et al., 2019, p. 151).
I specifically chose these four because in recent projects I have been associated with, working in a virtual world, it is difficult to bring all voices to the table. Our team suffers from "the loudest voices in the room" generates the idea or the path forward. In turn, individuals are unable to share their ideas, ask clarifying questions, and creates distrust and a lack of respect among the team.
High performing teams are most successful when they practice trust, respect, authenticity, and strong communication among members"
