Comment or respond Provide constructive feedback on your peer's plan for increasing the desired behavior - is the concept of stimulus control applied correctly? In either case, provide an additional example. Is stimulus control a factor in the discussion on maintenance and generalization? Provide constructive feedback or an alternate suggestion. Ask at least one thoughtful follow up question. Every New Year, I think it is a really common goal to start working out. This year, I did make it a goal of mine to start working out and eating healthier. I was able to maintain it for a while, but it was short-lived. To begin, it is important to know that I have never enjoyed working out. Some people enjoy the burn afterward or like the way they can see their bodies change, etc. but I do not and find the act of working out boring and tedious. Therefore, the results of my working out are not an effective reinforcer (Cooper et al. 2020). If the reinforcer isn't effective or part of daily life, it often holds very little value. Working out normally has a positive reinforcement effect, as the increase in muscle or increase in health leads to an increased level of working out. Because those reinforcers weren't effective, I would imagine this is why I could really never get working out to stick. One thing I tried once and I think would be effective in the future is planning for stimulus control on purpose and manipulating the environment to encourage working out. According to Lattal (2013), stimulus control is "not possible in the absence of the reinforcement that maintains the behavior", that is to say, if there is no reinforcement, the behavior has no reason to be maintained. I believe that something that would make working out more easily maintained would be adding another stimulus to create stimulus control. The current stimulus for working out would be the alarm that goes off when I have to go workout for the day. However, this is a poor motivator because the reinforcer doesn't work very well. What may be more effective would be watching TV while I work out. I did try watching an episode of a show on my phone with my headphones in while walking on the treadmill, and I found that time passed faster and I was able to think less about whether my muscles hurt or I was tired and more about the plot of the show. Assuming I am watching the same show every time, this may eventually exhibit stimulus control and I might associate watching the show with wanting to work out. This also would be an example of classical conditioning (Cooper et al. 2020) because the pairing of the show and having to work out will eventually condition the watching of the show and elicit the response of working out. However, to maintain this over time and settings, it may be helpful to not watch the same show so it cannot become unconditioned if I am just watching TV without working out. Varying the shows would allow the maintenance to extend across time and even across settings, as I would find working out just as motivating. When my alarm to workout goes off, the reinforcement that I can actually use that hour to watch a show becomes much more effective. References: Cooper, J., Heron, T., & Heward, W. (2020).
