Theme 1 - Age and race discrimination

Bryan Stevenson is a unique individual who has experienced age and race discrimination as he was just graduating from Harvard Law when he took McMillan's case. One of Stevenson's first cases is that of Walter McMillian. In 1987, McMillian was sentenced to death for the murder of a young white woman in Monroeville, Alabama despite mounting evidence proving his innocence. This is a very difficult case especially he was already at the death row and the Attorneys and police discriminated Bryan as they don't think such a young man will be able to handle this case and they thought that Bryan was only fighting for McMillan's case to fulfill his "fantasy" of becoming known. He was brave enough to continue doing what he thinks is right. He has represented the of the oppressed who dare to take on the flawed system and speak for those who can't speak for themselves. Also, under the age and race discrimination. It was also shown in the film where black people were excluded who qualified for jury service which is very sad because they are also a citizen of this country. During the hearing to dismiss all the charges at the supreme court, Walter McMillan's family weren't allowed by the officer as it was ordered by the District Attorney. They only allowed them to enter the courtroom when there were no seats left having the fact that that was a public hearing which is very upsetting. I couldn't fathom how behavior like this really happened in the past. Knowing it can also happen to me because I was not born in this country.

Comment specifically on age and race discrimination discussed below, how was it illustrated of a age and race discrimination, concept in the film Harriet (if you know the film), and /or why you find this post compelling or academically interesting.

theme 1 - diversity

In the film Harriet a strong theme that continued to show throughout the film was Diversity. Harriet helped many other slaves escape to freedom. Harriet helped anyone seeking freedom from slavery no matter their age, or gender. Not only was this the only example of diversity shown in the film, but during this time Harriet was experiencing the hardship of not having the same rights, due to the color of her skin. While talking about diversity it is important to mention that Harriet also showed qualities of inclusion. Inclusion is when a person can see aspects of themselves which make them standout from everyone around them, while being viewed as different to outsiders. Harriet knew that being a slave was not her life story and took every effort into changing the path of her life, even though other people looked at her as a piece of property, Harriet still took her stand and made a huge impact to change the way other people viewed her. All humans are different based on looks, age, race, or gender but we all deserve to be treated the same no matter how we look. In the film Harriet, the most important message is to treat everyone equally, and to never make someone feel less of a person based on skin color.
