Communication 1. Determine Sovereignty of the Magattary Islands: The nations of Faragro and Jaquidan both claim sovereign title to a chain of small islands called Magattary. The islands are situ- ated approximately three miles equidistant from the coastline of each of the two nations. In 1525, Captain Bahanic from Portagala originally discovered the islands, and planted his nation's flag there to stake his claim for the Queen. Although a series of expeditions from Portagala visited the islands for the purpose of trading with the indigenous peoples, no per- manent community settlement survived, aside from a trading post located within a coastal inlet on one of the islands. The trading post was periodically visited by Portugala ships, which stopped to obtain water and other supplies. The trading post was abandoned in 1880. Faragro, aside from its proximity to Magattary, claims title to the islands because mis- sionaries established villages for the purpose of "civilizing" the indigenous peoples, the Maggu, by introducing their religion, culture, and language. Consequently, over time, the majority of Maggu people had adopted Faragro social values. The Jaquidan government, besides its proximity to Magattary, builds its claim on the fact that it established a naval base, which it continues to occupy, on the island in 1938
