COMMUNICATION NETWORKS

A communication network refers to the channels by which information flows $($Robbins$,2001).$ Cook and Hunsaker $(2001)$ identify four types of communication networks which are applicable to departments, groups and teams in an organisation:

The Wheel Network which involves a group$$s members in communicating with each other via a central member. This type of communication network is applicable to certain groups but not to teams where considerable interaction between all team members needs to take place $($Jones et al$.,2001).$

The Chain Network which typifies departments or sections within organisations with a strong vertical hierarchy where subordinates only communicate with their immediate manager $($Cook and Hunsaker, $2001).$ This network also typifies communication on a production line.

The Circle Network involves group members in communicating with members who are in close proximity to them or who have similar backgrounds $($Cook and Hunsaker, $2001).$

The Star Network

While the wheel, chain, circle and star networks represent formal communication networks, an informal network of communication also exists within organisations. This is known as the grapevine and has the following characteristics:
