Case Study: Johnny Jones

You have just been appointed to the Parole Board. You are at the hearing, when Johnny Jones comes before you. Johnny Jones was sentenced to 6 years in jail for sexually assaulting a former girlfriend. Johnny Jones has never been arrested before and this is his first offense. He was out on bond 1 year and 1/2 prior to being sentenced. The details of the PSI indicate that Johnny was raised in a single parent home with his mother, and older sister. He has always maintained viable employment. The PSI indicates on the night of the offense, the offender entered the female's residence, he was under the influence of alcohol at time, proceeded to approach the victim on her couch and sexually assault her. The victim impact statement stated, "I am fearful for my life, I feel violated, I am scared to be home alone, he was a friend and/or ex, and I do not know how he could violate me" etc. etc. While in jail he has had constant contact and been supported by his mother, sister, and a female cousin. While in jail he found out he had a 1-year old daughter whom his mother brings to see him. He also works as a chef in the kitchen, attends religious services regularly, and has completed victim offense classes as well as Substance abuse treatment. He has done 3 years, (he is eligible for parole) after 85% due to the violent nature of the offense. A letter was sent to the victim, asking informing her of the upcoming release, and if she had any objections. To date, the letter has not been returned to the Parole Board. He is now before you.
