Project: The purpose of this project is to enhance your depth of understanding of financial statements and to apply financial statement analysis techniques for comparison.

Project Report Format: The project report should include a cover page followed by a letter of transmittal, an abstract and a table of contents. The main report should be started after the table of contents.

Requirements:

Accounting Analysis:

Collect the published annual reports of the assigned companies for the last consecutive fiscal years (2019 & 2020) and submit the copies of financial statements of the annual report along with your final report. If you download the annual reports from the company web site, email the annual reports. Throughout the report you need to refer (note number or page number) from where you found the information. Provide a brief overview of each of the companies along with an overview of the industry with key players of the industry and market share. Moreover describe the nature of the business, primary products and etc.

What is the primary focus of the company’s management letter in the current year?

Discuss the income statement. (Is this a consolidated or comprehensive statement? Explain and discuss. Are there any discontinued items? Cumulative effects of change in accounting principle(s)? If so, briefly discuss the nature of these items.)

Discuss the balance sheet. (Does the stock have a par value? Can the company issue any more stock? Were there any unpaid income taxes at the end of the current year?

Discuss the notes to the financial statement. (What are the subject of first three notes? How are the inventories stated? What depreciation methods are used? Are there any other footnotes that are unusual and/or distinctive to this company? )

State the dividend policies of the companies. Give an overview of what dividends the companies have paid over last two years. How this dividend policy may have affected company’s Balance Sheet items.

Perform ratio analysis (see Appendix attached) for the last two years for each of the companies and identify the industry benchmark. Interpret and compare what the ratios imply about each company's performance.

Appendix-The project should include an appendix containing all the formulas and calculations.

Financial Statements-
Annual reports of the companies and the industry average can be downloaded from the company’s official website.
