Complete the following (explained bullet point format is preferred)
1. Distributive Tactics. Create one comprehensive list of all distributive tactics and assess how comfortable you think you would be with using each tactic (based on your past awareness or experience). Try to be honest in your assessment - the goal here is to provide yourself with a realistic baseline rather than to show off. Use this table format to compile that information:
Distributive Tactic Name | Brief Definition | Level of Comfort 1 = Uncomfortable with Tactic | Level of Comfort 2 = Somewhat Uncomfortable with Tactic | Level of Comfort 3 = Neither Comfortable nor Uncomfortable with Tactic | Level of Comfort 4 = Somewhat Comfortable with Tactic | Level of Comfort 5: Very Comfortable with Tactic |
2. Distributive Strengths. Based on the data compiled in the table, choose two tactics with which you are most comfortable. Briefly explain how you have used each tactic in the past (i.e., why do you feel you are most comfortable with them) and explain how those have worked to your advantage (i.e., helped you get what you wanted). Are there any instances in which you could see those tactics backfire? What could be their drawbacks.
3. Distributive Development Areas. Part of the goal of this course is to help you learn about and practice new tactics. To do those, choose three distributive negotiation tactics which are not your strengths and which you would like to deliberately practice in the upcoming negotiations. For some of you this will come naturally, if distributive negotiations are something you have mainly focused on in the past. For many, this will be a stretch assignment and you will need to force yourself to do this. For each of the three tactics, briefly justify why you have chosen it.
Why do you think this particular tactic would be most useful to you?
How will you make sure that you practice it? How will you hold yourself accountable?
