compose a thoughtful Response to the discussion topic and include any references, For this week's discussion I decided to focus on workflow, as I believe efficiency is one of the best traits a person or business can pursue. I was following the instructor's advice and searching the term as she prescribed, and the first article that came up was by the National Institute of Health about organizational workflow as it related to nurses. I was about to continue scrolling through, when I realized that while it was not necessarily about IT, it may be one of the examples to give to the importance of workflow. When looked at broadly, the number of variables to select the proper equipment and the information needed to make an informed selection is vaster than many would assume; and due to all these variables, no one on the outside could make a standard design to optimize the workflow. As Carol Cain and Saira Haque describe in their handbook for nurses, "some workflows are designed, while others arise organically and evolve. The systems and methods by which organizations accomplish goals differ dramatically" (Cain & Haque, 2008). If that is not the best way to describe the basis for which workflows should arise through, I would be highly surprised. As to the integration of methods to enhance the workflow of organizations, it is not as clear cut when you begin to throw profit and demand into the mix. While it would be easy to assume the most beneficial route a company such as an automobile maker would take to building vehicles; having an assembly line where the vehicle is gradually built as it makes its way down, is not the most effective in the long route. Due to the goals of workflow to improve efficiency and increase profits, or decrease expenditures, variables must be factored it. In a paper by Ojha, White, and Rogers, for the International Journal of Production Research, while testing a model they designed for flexibility in the manufacturing which provided the organization to effectively manage for demand and alter the product being produced. This additional flexibility and the decrease in time and resources, converting the manufacturing, showed a positive trade off was achievable (Ojha, White, & Rogers, 2013). A workflow is beneficial in that it decreases waste, but if made too rigid or planned to narrowly, it can end up hindering growth
