A stereotype is a widely held belief of an image or characteristic of a particular group of people. The textbook mentions many forms of stereotyping in the workplace that are based on sex, color, race, and national origins, etc. Stereotyping can exist in different areas of HR such as recruiting, selection, hiring, appraisals, and compensation and many other areas. An example of stereotyping is found in Hopkins v. Price Waterhouse case. A female employee performance appraisal was based off different criteria than male employees, which led to her denial to promote to partner. She was told that she needed to go to charm school and act more like a woman. This is a case of disparte treatment/adverse impact because it has a negative effect of the facially neutral policy which states that policies should apply equally to all appropriate employees. The Civil Right Act of 1964, Title VII addresses the issue of discrimination and hold employers liable for discrimination in the workforce. Employees are allowed to sue employers for stereotyping and discrimination.
