Consider the 32-long horizonal beam A-C (Fig. 2a) with simple hinge and roller supports at A and C, respectively. To minimize the deflection of the beam A-C at point B, the beam is connected to a 1.5%-long circular rod B-D by two pins at B and D. The beam A-C is subjected to a uniform distributed load (wa) as shown in Fig. 2a. The beam has a constant Lac (moment of inertia), and the uniform cross-sectional area of the rod B-D is Aap. Both the beam and rod to have the same E (elastic modulus). The cross-section of the beam and the location of the neutral axis is shown in Fig. 2b.
