Susan is a 24-year-old female that was in a car accident when she was 21 years old. She was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine during her accident which resulted in fracturing her back and right leg. Susan underwent extensive physical therapy and treatment to recover from her accident. However, due to her previous drug use history she quickly became addicted to the opiates she was prescribed for her chronic pain. She also reports she was in ongoing counseling for long-term depression that she was diagnosed with when she was 14 years old. When Susan was in her accident she was in her senior year of college and dropped out due to her accident and has not returned. She has been living with roommates until a year ago when they kicked her out as she could not work or obtain steady income due to her chronic pain and growing addiction to opioids. Since that time Susan has either been staying on friends' couches, in homeless shelters, or the streets. She reports that she lost her car so she was unable to continue to go to physical therapy, counseling, or the doctor to maintain her prescription and has started to use heroin to cope with her physical pain and depression. She reports that she has started to exchange sex for drugs and is sharing needles with whoever has the heroin.
