Consider the following situation: A researcher obtains a random sample of students using schools located in San Francisco. After completing her research she states, "I may generalize my findings to the entire state of California because the San Francisco schools (and hence my sample) reflect a wide variety of socioeconomic levels, ethnic groups, and teaching styles." What's your reaction? (Is variety the same thing as representativeness?)
