Consider the issue of access to public restrooms for people who are transgender. One side of the debate involves safety issues for a transgender person. For example, a person who was born male but who now identifies as a woman, dresses in a feminine manner, and who may have undergone hormonal and surgical treatments to physically resemble a woman may be at risk in using a restroom designated for men only. The other side of the debate involves safety concerns for women about sharing a public restroom with a transgender person who was born male and whose sexual characteristics at birth are the opposite of those for whom the public restroom is intended. The issue is obviously very emotionally charged. As this issue continues to be discussed, what part might psychologists play in educating people about their concerns and in mediating this discussion
