1. The Affordable Care Act includes several measures designed to increase people's access to health care insurance and reduce health care costs. Among these are the following:

• Insurance companies cannot deny someone health insurance coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition (discussed in the text on p. 690).
• "The Individual Mandate" (discussed in text on pp. 684-685. You should also review the discussion of insurance in Powerpoint 19 - Intro and Insurance.)
• Requiring insurance companies to cover preventative care services without additional costs to patients (discussed in the text on p. 692).

(a) Explain your understanding of each of these provisions and how each is meant to help achieve the goal of expanding coverage and reducing health care costs.

(b) Do you think these are good strategies? If not, what would you propose as an alternative? Explain.

(c) Overall, what do you think of the Affordable Care Act?
