Consider the scenario of a mother and young child in the store at the checkout line. Suddenly the young child begins screaming and reaching for a candy bar. The child's mother first responds by yelling at the child to be quiet. The child screams even louder. The mother then stops yelling and gives the child the candy bar, after which the child stops screaming. Think through the actions of the mother and child and the resulting consequences. Using operant conditioning terminology (positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment) explain what transpired. What behavior was reinforced? What behavior did the mother want to reinforce? How was punishment used (and perhaps misused)? Why might it be difficult to "extinguish" this child's yelling? What might you, acting as a psychologist, tell the mom to do differently? Be very specific about any consequences you might recommend, the type of reinforcement/punishment you are proposing to be used, and the timing of these consequences.
