Considerations of design and reliability are relevant to many products and services relating to the Covid-19 pandemic: the medical equipment of course (PPEs, masks, ventilators etc.), but also services such as testing, contact-tracing, vaccine development, emergency care, ICU care etc. We even saw the temporary conversion of automobile plants into ventilator manufacturing units, liquor producers into hand sanitizer manufacturers, and textile plants into mask production units. As regards the vaccine also, there is a whole range of design/reliability issues: the worldwide race to develop ("design") it, the effectiveness ("reliability") claims made for the different vaccines, the basis for these effectiveness claims and how they have held up in light of actual field experience in different settings etc. What are some other design/reliability issues relating to the pandemic?
