Constants Mass (g) Diameter (mm) Penny 2.5 19.05 Quarter TBD 24.26 Determine the Mass of a Quarter For consistency purposes and to aid in trouble shooting, a penny stack shall be located somewhere to the left of the fulcrum. Correspondingly, a stack of three quarters shall be located to the right of the fulcrum. The torque provided by the stack of the pennies will be considered the independent variable. As such, the torque provided by the pennies should be plotted on the x-axis. The lever arm to the stack of three quarters will be plotted on the y-axis. A minimum of 10 data pairs are required to be plotted. Use the plotted data points and an appropriate fit to determine the mass of a quarter. Fit coefficients need to be displayed to a minimum of 4 decimal places. Data pair: (penny stack torque, quarter stack lever arm) Hints: . Try to maximize the lever arm lengths. Use a minimum of three pennies in the stack. . Only use a single stack of pennies at a time. Vary the number of pennies in the stack and the lever arm lengths to vary the torque provided by the stack of pennies. Determine the center of mass of the stick by balancing the stick on the fulcrum. . Use the edge of the coins to measure a position, and then use the provided diameters to determine more precisely where the center of mass of the stack of coins is located on the stick. Be consistent which edge of the coin is used as a reference for the measurement. . Use masking tape to aid in marking fulcrum and coin positions. If masking tape is used, masking tape must be applied before the center of mass of the stick is determined. . If the stick is a wooden yardstick purchased from a big box store, the graduations are too large and are not accurate enough to be used to measure the lever arms.
