Teachers as facilitators of learning should have a continuous feedback in order for them to effectively plan, monitor, and evaluate their instruction. For them to establish data, they should conduct any of the following types: diagnostic; formative; and summative.

Diagnostic evaluation is normally undertaken before instruction, in order to assess the students' prior knowledge of a particular topic or lesson. Its purpose is to anticipate potential learning problems and group/place students in the proper course or unit of study. Placement of some elementary school children in special reading programs based on a reading comprehension test is an example of this type of evaluation. Requiring entering college freshmen to enroll in Math Plus based on the results of their entrance test in Mathematics is another example.

Diagnostic evaluation can also be called pre-assessment since it is designed to check the ability levels of students in some areas so that instructional starting points can be established. Through this type of evaluation, teachers can be provided with valuable information concerning students' knowledge, attitudes, and skills when they begin studying a subject and can be employed as basis for remediation or special instruction. Summative Evaluation is done to determine student achievement for grading purposes. The grade serves as the basis for making a decision whether or not the teacher will pass or fail a certain learner. However, grades are based on varied sources like recitation, summative test, quizzes, projects etc. The grade given by the teacher is a summary of all the learner's performances in various assessment approaches.

Formative evaluation is conducted by the teacher before, during and after conducting the varied activities of the lesson. Result of this helps the teacher to determine the effectiveness of a particularly teaching strategy applied in introducing the topic to the learners.
