Ms. Ramirez: Where is Courtney? Shes not late again, is she?

Mark: Um, no. I think shes down at the copy room.

Ms. Ramirez: Well, tell her I want to see her as soon as she gets back. Mark: No problem, Ms. Ramirez. Ill tell her.

Courtney: Hi, Mark. Mark: Courtney.

Courtney: My mother wasnt feeling well this morning, so my sister is watching the baby. It took half an hour just getting her to my sisters.

Mark: Courtney, Ms. Ramirez was just here looking for you.

Courtney: Oh.

Mark: I told her you were already in.

Courtney: Thanks, Mark. Youre a good friend. It wont happen again.

Mark: Courtney, thats the third time its happened this week. I am your friend. But Im really uncomfortable lying for you like this.

Courtney: I know ... but this has just been a bad week.

Mark: I dont think you realize how often youre late these days.

Courtney: I have responsibilities, Mark. Im a parent now.

Mark: I know, but.... Look, you need to make some other arrangements for your day care. The system youve got isnt working for you.

Courtney: Im not going to just hand over my baby to strangers.

Mark: Why dont you talk to Ms. Ramirez? Maybe you can make some kind of flextime arrangement. Or go to human resources. You cant be the first person whos had this problem here.

Courtney: I dont want to tell anyone. It would jeopardize my job. And it isnt a big problem.

Mark: Courtney, it is a big problem, and youve got to do something about it. Im not going to cover for you next time.
