During middle childhood to early adolescence development, there are many changes that occur cognitively, behaviorally, and socially. I found it interesting to read that during middle childhood development, children's memory is highly affected during this stage.

I do think that cliques play a huge role in identity development. Children often find themselves grouped with people who are just like them and who understand them, where they feel like they are surrounded. Feeling validated by others, who share many of your ideas and feelings, can contribute to a sense of self-worth, relatedness, and security (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). They feel accepted and belonged to a certain clique, which can influence their interests and dislikes and shape who they become. Good peer relationships and social interaction are important as they can provide children with experience, opportunities for problem-solving, and empathy skills, as well as strong language skills, creativity, social intelligence, and confidence.

The information I would offer middle school teachers is this period in their students in their life are constantly experiencing changes physically, emotionally, cognitively, social development, etc. The outside environment can affect their developmental stages. In the book, it states "They must learn to control their behavior, monitor their attention, and acquire formal and complicated academic competencies. They must make friends and learn to navigate the schoolyard, with its greater demands for athletic prowess, social skill, and cooperative negotiation of conflicts. They must also learn the rules of the group and when to abide by them. They must discover what it means to be male or female, not to mention being themselves." As you can see they are constantly going through stuff. I remember in middle school always worried for example why do those girls have that and I don't, will I make friends with people in my class? This week's reading allowed me to learn more information about middle schoolers' development so one day I can help my child.

When sharing strategies to help middle school teachers support the development of healthy peer relationships, I think encouraging positive communication is the most important information to share. Teachers can not only model positive communication skills, but they can teach it to middle schoolers as well. Teaching positive communication skills may look like active listening, empathizing, and speaking respectfully to others. Engaging in this positive communication can help students develop healthy communication habits and learn to resolve conflicts quickly and peacefully. I think communication is so important in every day life, and positive communication is not as common as one would think. There are adults who cannot communicate properly, so instilling these skills in the younger generations can establish positive communication at earlier stages in their development, resulting in healthy peer relationships.
