Corporate Finance question. What are the benefits of share repurchase?

I'm looking over class notes and it states this: Share repurchases have two advantages: Lower tax bracket. Possibility to defer taxes when capital gains are taxed only when realized (at least in part). Can you explain how both are advantages?
