What purpose does formula serve in today's popular culture?

Formula helps build and make up what we consume, and it is the building block of pop culture itself. Without it, things would not have a structure, and it would be hard to try and get an idea of commonalities shared between content. The topics talked about in this class all have formulas behind them. One such formula is The Hero's Journey, discussed in week one (required reading) and two (optional reading). Many hero stories fit this "journey," which is another word for formula in this instance. People also like familiar things; formulas give movies and other content labels/categories (AKA Genres). Formulas also can change and vary as time, and real-world events occur.
