Lesson 04 Discussion - Group 2 13 13 From (23FAJ HIST 181, Sec 001: Intro Middle East (WC, Hastings) For this discussion, you will begin by posting a photograph to this discussion forum. You will then look at all of the photographs that were posted and compose a reply based on the instructions below. The class is split into two groups for this activity. To complete this discussion: Complete an initial submission to that includes: A single photograph . An exterior or interior photograph of a mosque from anywhere in the Islamic world of any time period . Or a photograph with translated inscriptions of a coin (or paper money) produced anywhere in the Islamic world in any time period. A citation for the photograph . Photo citation must be done in the Chicago style. For help, try the Citation machine Be sure your photo is not of the same site or object as anyone else's in the gallery. Do not present a photo of either the Dome of the Rock or the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus, as these are already exhibited in the lesson on material culture. This initial submission is due Friday, 11:59pm EST Following the initial due date, carefully review all the photographs shared by your group members and note similarities and differences among the mosques and examples of money. Consider the material (stone, brick, mud, wood) and forms of mosque architecture (such as domes, minarets, courtyards), interior and exterior decoration, and -- if relevant -- landscaping and location. Also consider the titles used on the coins and the messages of their inscriptions. Write a reply in this discussion forum describing the similarities and differences that you noticed in the forms and decorations of the posted examples of the mosques and the coins with explicit reference to at least three examples.
